Ownership matters.

We are a nonprofit rooted in Nordic values of trust, equity and closeness to nature. Nordic Stewards exists to inspire and support entrepreneurs, owners, investors, foundations and ecosystem builders in the Nordics on their journey towards self-determination and purpose orientation. We work with ownership, governance and enterprise models that place purpose, responsibility and long-term value creation at the heart of business.

We believe that how companies are owned shapes how they act. Ownership influences the decisions that are made, the time horizons that are valued, the people who are heard, and the role a company plays in society. If we want enterprises to contribute to a more regenerative, democratic and equitable economy, we also need to ask deeper questions about ownership itself.

Nordic Stewards is being built as a shared Nordic platform for this work.

Across Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland, we are connecting people and initiatives who are exploring how ownership can serve purpose. Some of this work is connected to succession, foundations and long-term governance. Some of it is connected to mission-driven investment, regenerative business, democratic ownership, or other models that seek to protect a company’s purpose over time. We see these conversations as connected by a shared question: how can enterprises be structured, financed and governed in ways that allow them to remain independent, responsible and purpose-oriented across generations?

The Nordic region has a particular contribution to make.

Our societies are shaped by traditions of trust, cooperation, civic responsibility, strong institutions and a close relationship to nature. These values do not automatically create better ownership models, but they offer fertile ground for asking what business could become if ownership was designed with care. The Nordics also hold different national experiences and legal traditions, from foundation ownership and succession models to emerging investment structures and purpose-driven enterprise programmes. Nordic Stewards aims to make these experiences visible, connect them across borders, and support the development of a stronger field.

We are not building one single model for every country or every company.

Instead, we are creating a shared space for learning, coordination and field building while respecting national contexts and different pathways. Each country will develop its own work, partnerships and priorities, while contributing to a common Nordic narrative: that ownership can be a force for self-determination, long-term responsibility and societal transformation.

Our work is still developing. We are currently formalising the Nordic structure, strengthening the collaboration between national teams, and creating a public platform where people can learn more about the work taking place across the region. Over time, this website will include national pages, current activities, resources, cases and ways to engage.

For now, this landing page is an invitation.

If you are an entrepreneur exploring how to protect the purpose of your company, an owner thinking about succession, an investor looking for more responsible ownership structures, a foundation interested in alternative enterprise models, or a policymaker, researcher or practitioner working in this field, we would like to hear from you.

Nordic Stewards is for those who believe that ownership matters, and that the next generation of enterprises must be built with deeper responsibility for people, place, purpose and the future.
